How to Choose the Right Canvas Size for Your Wall
Choosing the right canvas size is one of those things that seems simple until you're standing in front of a blank wall, tape measure in hand, second-guessing yourself. Get it right and a piece feels like it belongs. Get it wrong and even a beautiful print can look like an afterthought.
Start With the Furniture Below It
If your canvas is going above a sofa, bed, sideboard, or console table, the easiest rule of thumb is this: your artwork should span roughly 60–75% of the furniture's width. Above a 200cm sofa, that puts you somewhere between 120–150cm wide — which is exactly why our Large canvas size (60 x 90cm) works so well as a single statement piece, and why our multi-panel sets exist for wider spaces.
Too small, and the piece looks like it's floating, disconnected from the furniture. Too large, and it can overwhelm the room rather than anchor it.
No Furniture? Think in Terms of the Whole Wall
For an empty wall — a stairwell, an entry hallway, a blank space in a living room — aim for your art to fill somewhere between 50–70% of the available width. Centre it at eye level, which for most rooms works out to around 145–155cm from the floor to the centre of the piece.
Small Spaces Deserve Art Too
Not every wall is a big, empty canvas of its own. Our Small size (30 x 40cm) is built for the in-between spaces — a narrow hallway, above a desk, tucked beside a doorway, or grouped together in a gallery-style cluster. A gallery wall of three or four small pieces can often do more for a room than one oversized print.
When in Doubt, Mock It Up First
Before you commit, cut a piece of cardboard, paper, or even painter's tape to the size you're considering and hold it against the wall. It sounds low-tech, but it's the single most reliable way to judge scale in the actual room, in actual light, rather than guessing from a product photo.
Still Torn Between Two Sizes?
If you're between sizes, we'd generally suggest sizing up rather than down — undersized art is one of the most common styling regrets we hear about. And if none of our standard sizes quite fit your space, our Custom Canvas Print option lets you choose the exact dimensions you need.
